Certified Campus Safety Processional (CCSP)

The Certified Campus Safety Professional Program (CCSP) is a new program for the campus safety and security professionals. The Institute For Campus Safety (ICS) is dedicated to enhancing the professionalism of campus safety and security personnel and to developing and supporting campus safety efforts nationally through education. By providing a national standard for training the CCSP will help establish professional standards by ensuring top—quality training.

The CCSP curriculum is modeled after the Campus Law Enforcement course mandated by the law in California. The Campus Law Enforcement course and the Campus Security Officer course were created after the California Legislature recognized the need for specialized training for campuses in addition to the basic law enforcement academy.

Requirements For Certification

The certificate program is intended for people who work in or are responsible for their organization’s campus safety, emergency management and security compliance. People in these positions need a general understanding of many subjects in order to deal with relatively routine operations, and they need adequate insight into the complexities of campus safety and security issues.

The CCSP will consist of 40 hours of coursework. This will normally consist of the required Advanced Campus Security Officer Course—Train The Trainer (8), one course each in Operations and Tactics (8 hours), Law and Liability (8 hours), and Interpersonal Relations (8 hours), plus one elective course (8 hours) in any of the three major topical areas or credit for work experience (8 hours) .

One hour of coursework can be granted for 6 months full time experience in a campus safety environment as a campus safety officer or supervisor of campus safety personnel. A maximum of 8 hours credit will be granted. For example, an applicant with 4 years qualified experience will be granted a maximum of 8 hours academic credit.

Applicants must complete a work equivalency form (right click and save as).

Application For CCSP

The applicant must have at least one year of experience in a campus safety organization or have responsibility for campus safety, be currently employed in an educational institution or in an organization that directly serves an educational institution, and hold a valid first aid certificate.

Candidates must complete each course as described, and complete all the necessary evaluations and examinations by taking ICS courses. Candidates may also apply for credit for courses that are equivalent to an ICS course. These may be courses offered at other training institutions, in-service or pre-service courses, or courses offered on the candidates site as staff development. Candidates may challenge a course by completing an course equivalency form (right click and save as). The Advanced Campus Security Officer Course—Train The Trainer is mandatory and cannot be challenged.

To start the application process each applicant needs to submit a completed candidate application and an application fee to the Institute for Campus Safety.

Award Of Certificate

Each candidate must complete each course and all evaluations and examinations. The CCSP will be awarded to the candidate upon recommendation from the ICS Director of Standard and approval of the ICS Advisory Board.
